USA: ton-miles to increase by 50 per cent

Ton-miles on the country’s transport system will nearly double (+49%) in the next three decades.

The USA’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have released freight projections showing that ton-miles on the country’s transport system will nearly double (+49%) in the next three decades.

A ton-mile is defined as the movement of one ton of freight for one mile. Version 4.3 of the Freight Analysis Framework (FAF) reckons that the transportation system will carry 7.6 trillion ton-miles in 2045, compared to 5.1 trillion ton-miles in 2015. Read more
