Indian government taking a stand on overloaded trucks

Drivers of overloaded commercial vehicles in India will be subject to more stringent penalties and will have to pay tenfold higher toll charges if such trucks are spotted. A new ruling on truck overloading has just been published by the country’s government in New Delhi (India), according to the local press.

Until now, Indian rules permitted an overloaded vehicle to pass toll plazas by paying the toll charge specified for the next higher category vehicle. Overloading is one of the major causes of road accidents and fatalities in the country. In 2012, some 30,500 people lost their lives on Indian roads.
