Road haulage remains vital

According to the latest data issued by Germany’s federal environmental agency, truck transport became better for the environment than carriage by barge, which is perceived to be more environment-friendly, for the first time in 2014.

 

An inland barge emits 26% more nitrous oxide and double as much particulate matter per tonne kilometre (tkm) than a lorry. In 2014, the nitrous oxide output averaged 0.344 g/tkm for HGVs and 0.433 g/tkm for barges. The emission of particulate matter amounted to 0.005 g/tkm (HGV) and 0.01 g/tkm (barge). Read more
