Tunnel between Denmark and Germany is not allowed under EU law.
The EU court in Luxembourg has decided that Denmark’s planned state aid for the Fehmarn Belt tunnel between Denmark and Germany is not allowed under EU law, and has therefore overturned the European Commission’s 2015 approval of the financing model for the tunnel.
Without this approval, the current Fehmarn Belt tunnel project will be shelved. The court’s ruling supports the legal action that was undertaken by the Danish ferry company, Scandlines, and the German environmental organisation Nabu against the Danish state's plan to subsidise the link. Read more
