Nuremberg is the new hub in the extended intermodal network of the port system.

TRIESTE - November 5, 2020, marked the launch of the new intermodal service connecting Trieste with the Nuremberg hub, located in the north of Bavaria, with one weekly service to be further increased to at least two per week by 2021.

The complex intermodal project is the result a long implementation process. At a time when Europe is implementing border closure policies to mitigate the problems related to the spread of Covid-19, it provides further proof that intermodality in the port of Trieste facilitates the creation of opportunities and ensures connectivity with European industrial and consumer areas of reference.

The service builds upon DFDS’s well-established presence in the port of Trieste. The Danish group DFDS is a global leader in Ro-Ro transport and a shareholder in the Samer Seaports terminal, which will be responsible for transporting between Trieste and Bavaria the cargo from its ships. The intermodal service will be operated by the Mercitalia Rail-TX joint venture in collaboration with Alpe Adria, the company responsible for the development of intermodal transport services in the port of Trieste, as part of its management of an extensive network at European level.

During the initial phase, the service will connect Trieste’s Pier V with the TRICON Terminal in Nuremberg, managed by the Bayernhafen Group. In addition to transferring traffic volumes from the Turkish and Greek markets in a sustainable manner, it will be an attractive hum for the export needs of the industrial systems of Bavaria and Friuli Venezia Giulia region.

Indeed, a dialogue is already in place with the region’s key industrial stakeholders on the possibility of using the Cervignano hub as a collector for further continental trade.

This new intermodal service is the confirmation that the international dynamics and the synergic dialogue of the players involved are a unique prerogative of the logistics system of the port of Trieste. More importantly, it is an expression of the strategic identity of the port of Trieste, which has always looked to increase its railway connectivity with Central Europe, starting with the Lander of Bavaria.

Zeno D'Agostino expressed great satisfaction with the launch of this new service: "Bavaria has always been a fundamental partner and Nuremberg, besides having an affective value for me, is an important hub of the Lander of Bavaria that can count on an increasingly solid integration with the port of Trieste and the industrial tissue of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region".
