30,000 Existing Vessels Estimated to Require Compliance.
Yet another acronym has recently found its way into the maritime vocabulary, EEXI, which stands for the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index, but this one needs serious consideration by ship owners. A regulation adopted at MEPC76 this week is due to take effect in January 2023.
Ratification of the standards required is a medium-term component of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) roadmap towards reducing global shipping’s carbon intensity by 40% over the next decade, using 2008 as a baseline. The 76th meeting of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 76) confirmed the regulation and so certain was classification society DNV of approval it launched an EEXI Calculator in advance of the vote.
EEXI, as opposed to the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) which has been in place since 2013 setting newbuild standards, is to assess the energy efficiency of existing ships, focusing solely on their design. It determines the standardised CO2 emissions related to a vessel’s installed engine power, transport capacity, speed, and degree of energy efficiency.
The regulation will be applicable for all cargo, RoPax and cruise vessels above 400 gross tonnes, depending on their propulsion type and whether they trade internationally. DNV estimates that currently up to 30,000 such vessels need to take action to comply with the EEXI regulation. Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV Maritime explained why the company felt the calculator was necessary:
“The EEXI is putting a great deal of pressure on ship owners to take immediate action in order to analyse the energy efficiency of their fleet and make any necessary adjustments to ensure compliance.
