Switzerland: clever strategy for fleet conversion

SBB Cargo is planning to have a standardized locomotive portfolio in future, consisting of modern hybrid locomotives with pantograph and battery.

 

The conversion from diesel to hybrid traction units is to take place over the next ten years. The basis for the fleet conversion has now been laid with the signing of a contract for a "sale & lease back" of the Am843 fleet.

 

The plan is for the Swiss freight railway to sell the 44 diesel locomotives and at the same time lease them back for at least five years - until modern hybrid locomotives are in service. Read more
