One of Russia's more important tasks

"The development of the Trans-Siberian Railway as the foundation of the Eurasian east–west direction is one of Russia's most important infrastructural tasks," said Russian Railways' first vice-president Vadim Morozov in his speech at the International Forum Transport and Transit Potential in St Petersburg.

The development programme for the Baikal-Amur main line and the Trans-Siberian Railway requires an investment of RUB 562.9 billion (EUR 12.84 billion) by 2018. This project, once completed, will raise the amount of traffic in the east-west direction by nearly one third, from 110 million to 155 million t per annum. The trans-Siberian route must be considered as a transcontinental line linking the Asia-Pacific region with Russia, the CIS, the Baltic States and Europe.
