A good year for italian airports

6% more goods in 2016 than in the previous year.

 

Italian airports handled almost 6% more goods in 2016 than in the previous year. Strong impulses came from outside, but the country’s flag carrier continues to fly low.


The total volume of goods carried by aeroplane in Italy in 2016 broke through the 1 million t mark. According to the airports association Assaeroporti the figure came to exactly 1.043 million t, putting it 5.9% above the score registered in 2015. The body said that worldwide demand for Italian products had helped drive the volume up.


Alitalia did not contribute all that much. The airline is continuing to struggle to break even. It recently released a joint statement with Air Malta declaring that the potential partners were ditching plans that they had been discussing for some months now for the former to take a stake in the latter (see also page 32 of ITJ 23-26 / 2016). Alitalia’s service between Milan Linate and Berlin Tegel airports (Air Berlin’s hub) is also set to become a victim of cost cuts in February. Both these last-named companies are members of the Etihad brand. The Abu Dhabi-based carrier itself is very active in Italy, serving three of the four most important air cargo hubs in the country – MXP, FCO and VCE. Read more
