The roads remain the main mode of transport in Ukraine, also because trains, including those linking Asia and Europe, circumnavigate the country. Now the nation is set to improve its road network.
The door to Europe is open for goods from Ukraine, and the trend is just right. In 2016 alone, trade between Ukraine and Poland – the latter is a key gateway to the West – grew by 17%. But Ukraine’s infrastructure remains a key problem. The country is ranked 80th in the World Bank’s global Logistics Performance Index (LPI). Though it has a network of 170,000 km of public roads – with about 52,000 km thereof main roads and 117,000 km local routes – their quality leaves something to be desired. In the World Economic Forum’s road index for 2016 the country is ranked in 132nd place, out of 140 nations.
Now the government has decided to do something about this sorry state of affairs. In 2017 it invested UAH 35 billion (EUR 1.1 billion) in road renovation; some experts described this as a mere drop in the ocean, however. An analysis published by the Ukrainian construction ministry has established that approximately 90% of the country’s roads have not been repaired for more than 30 years. Transport enterprises also make the situation worse by deploying overloaded lorries that damage the roads. In 2015 the cabinet in Kiev decreed a maximum weight of 24 t for trucks, but it has only been partially implemented. Read more
