In a recent report, Switzerland’s federal office for spatial development (ARE) said that the new railway infrastructure on the Gotthard axis has resulted in a noticeable shift of freight from road to rail.
In addition to transit traffic, the volume of goods transported regionally by rail between Ticino and German-speaking Switzerland has also increased significantly. The volume of containers handled in Ticino terminals has grown by around 38% since 2016. Read more
